What is the Glif & why should you care?

glif-featured

I love my iPhone 4. It’s a great phone and the camera features are pretty super too, especially when you use some of the camera apps available to really bring out your creativity. The one killer photography feature missing from the iPhone 4 – the ability to use a tripod for low light and panoramic images.

A few months ago, while on Twitter (user name @gushin), I saw that my friend @mikedmerrill had tweeted about an item he had just purchased for his iPhone 4 called the Glif.

The interesting thing is that Mike had only placed an order that would be fulfilled ONLY if the product had enough supporters pledged to buy the product though a website called Kickstarter. To those unfamiliar to the concept and the site, as I was before I saw Mike’s tweet, here’s how it works:
A company or individual comes up with a concept for a product, service or creative thing, they put together a proposal, add text, video, graphics, whatever will convey the idea to someone on the web. Kickstarter reviews it, decides to include it or reject it. If accepted Kickstarter adds it to the site with different “offers” for people to choose from. Sort of like levels of participation. For a product it could be that you get one shipped for pledging $xx, for $xxx you get three shipped signed with a bonus and so on. There is a time/date limit set, a $ amount needed to fund the project and it goes live. If the project gets the needed funding pledged within the time frame set, the project is funded.

For the Glif, the goal was $10,000. That was the sum the developers had projected would be needed to start manufacturing. They got pledges of $137, 417 from 5,273 people so the project was on.

I pledged $20, which entitled me to one Glif shipped. I don’t remember exactly when I pledged, but on November 2, 2010, it funded. The Glif arrived on my doorstep right around New Years. During the two months that it went into production, the project team sent updated emails with video’s and images keeping the 5,273 updated on the progress. It was really neat.

The product does work as advertised and has a really snug fit to the iPhone 4. More on the actual product after I have had some more use with it.

To read more about the Kickstarter concept, Ryan carson over at Think Vitamin has written an insightful post about the concept that explains it way better than I have. The comments on the post have some interesting takes on the positive and negative aspects of the concept as well.

Does anyone have any experience with the Glif or Kickstarter they would like to share?

Simple panoramic images in seconds with the iPhone app 360 Panorama

360-panorama

I purchased an iPhone app for photography a few weeks ago called 360 Panorama. It was late at night, so I tried it out from bed and the light was so low that the results were really poor, so I promptly forgot about it amidst the glut of apps on the phone.

So a few days ago I was doing my daily campus walk at Ut Dallas, where I work as a Web Designer and I found myself in the center of the campus, which had recently been renovated and redesigned. I remembered 360 Panorama and pulled the iphone out and took a quick full 360 degree photo from this spot.

Panoramic image of the UT Dallas campus

Well, in the phone itself, it’s pretty hard to see if the shot was good, but when I got back to the office I emailed the photo to myself and opened it up on my iMac and it was really nice. It comes out with this odd white border all around the shot where the app mixes the pieces of the shot together. A quick trip to Adobe Fireworks, my editor of choice, and the result was a great panoramic shot of the campus!

The full-size panoramic image is available if anyone wants to download it.

There are not too many controls, you choose either a white or black background for the uneven edges, push start and slowly and carefully move the camera around.

My boss thought it was cool and wants me to try it in a few months when the greenery comes back and to use a tripod. I’ll do that with the little iPhone 4 accessory I purchased recently called the Glif, which allows you to attach the iPhone 4 to a tripod.

360 Panorama is only $1.99 and well worth it in my opinion. Anybody else tried this app yet? What are your opinions?

More UT Dallas Construction – iPhone App

Since my last UT Dallas update the construction here on campus has been increasing at a fever pace (is that even correct grammar?).

The construction on the UTD campus makes it a bit of a challenge getting around campus some days, but ya gotta hope we will end up with a much better campus when it is all done.

The job is going really well. I love working in this university setting and am being challenged every day with new stuff to learn and get involved in.

The other thing I am really loving is my iPhone. The always connected aspect is very cool. I am writing this post from the UTD Student Union building in one of my 2 favorite chairs right from the iPhone.

I also purchased an app called “FTP on the Go” ($9.99 in the Apple App Store) that allows me to log on to my other ( non- WordPress) sites, look at all the files, download and edit a file and upload the edited file. That’s huge to be able to do that from my phone! At least it’s huge to a web designer.

UTD – Where I work.
